Connections on the ground - Grampians

The Transport Connections Program (TCP) provides funding for local organisations to coordinate projects and initiatives that improve access to services and community life for those who experience transport disadvantage. This case study showcases how TCP works on the ground in the Grampians region.

Bid for a bike rack

Moorabool Shire Council’s Front SEEAT Transport Connections Project has successfully operated the Bid for a Bike Rack grant program since November 2010, enabling local community groups to participate in transport infrastructure decisions.

Community groups and individuals are invited to nominate locations for bike rack installation through a grant process. The grant program enables the community to have a say in the selection of sites for bike racks, which ensures they are built in the best spots. By engaging community groups, the grants process helps promote the active transport agenda in the region.

Council engineers, community development officers and Transport Connections staff assess the applications based on the level of need, safety of the location and how well the application complements others to deliver positive outcomes across the entire shire.

Natalie Grero, TCP Coordinator, said the project has been a real success in community participation as well as providing necessary infrastructure for cyclists.

“The Bid for a Bike Rack Program gives the community a say in where they would like bike racks to be installed in their local towns and it encourages them to use cycling as an alternative form of transport,” Natalie said.
