Connections on the ground - Loddon Mallee
The Transport Connections Program (TCP) provides funding for local organisations to coordinate projects and initiatives that improve access to services and community life for those who experience transport disadvantage. This case study showcases how TCP works on the ground in the Loddon Mallee region.
Social media car pooling scheme a hit in Sunraysia
The Sunraysia Car Pool initiative, developed by Northern Mallee Transport Connections, is an excellent example of an innovative solution that cleverly addresses transport disadvantage. The Sunraysia Car Pool Facebook page provides the central point of contact for women in the Loddon Mallen region to arrange communal travel from outlying areas to Mildura or Ouyen for preliminary breast screens. Sunraysia Car Pool also gives women the option of car pooling from Mildura to the Breast Screen Victoria facilities in Bendigo for secondary breast screens.
This innovative approach utilises private transport in an efficient way and reduces the cost of access to healthcare services for the women involved. The project is also sustainable beyond the life of TCP funding as it hands responsibility for the coordination back to community members.
Tressna Martin, TCP Coordinator, has built strong relationships with the local media and the Sunraysia Car Pool project has received some outstanding media coverage as a result.
"The coverage has been great for our project and has increased the number of users accessing the car pooling scheme by 50 per cent," Tressna said.
