Heritage Council appointments

Applications sought for membership of the Heritage Council of Victoria

The Minister for Planning, Matthew Guy is seeking applications from individuals who wish to serve on the Heritage Council of Victoria.

Applications are sought from:

  • individuals with recognised skills in archaeology
  • individuals with recognised skills in engineering or building construction

Two individuals, each with skills in one of these areas will be appointed as members of the Heritage Council. A further two individuals will be appointed as alternate members. These appointments will be from 1 July 2013 for three years.

Women, Indigenous persons, people with a disability, young persons and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Heritage Council of Victoria

The Heritage Council provides the highest level of legal protection for cultural heritage places and objects in Victoria. As an independent statutory authority, the Heritage Council is the State's main decision-making body on cultural (non-Indigenous) heritage issues.

10 members and 10 alternate members are appointed by the Governor-in-Council upon the recommendation of the Minister for Planning.

The Heritage Council considers recommendations and receives professional advice from Heritage Victoria and both organisations work together on a range of committees.

Roles and responsibilities

Full members are expected to attend at least 75% of the eight Heritage Council meetings per year. Alternate members are expected to attend if the full member is unavailable.

Both full members and alternate members are expected to participate in one or more of the Heritage Council’s Committees or Advisory Committees, including registration and permit appeal hearings.

Expressions of interest are due by 5pm on Monday 29 April.

Documentation from unsuccessful applicants will be retained for two years and then destroyed.

Public sector employees

Public sector employees, including academic staff members of institutions of higher education, may not be eligible for remuneration and should contact the Heritage Council secretariat before applying.
