Heritage Victoria manages a large collection of artefacts from historical archaeological and shipwreck sites.
Accessing the collection
The collection is available for research and exhibition, and can be accessed online via the Victorian Archaeological Artefact Database. This link takes you to the database hosted by Museum Victoria.
The collection may be viewed by appointment. Artefacts are available for loan to other organisations for exhibitions, research or education projects. Contact Heritage Victoria to discuss collection access, loans or exhibitions.
Submitting artefacts to Heritage Victoria
Heritage Victoria may accession, store and manage significant artefacts retrieved during approved archaeological investigations, in accordance with the Heritage Act (1995).
The Guidelines for Investigating Historical Archaeological Artefacts and Sites outline the requirements under Permits and Consents for historical and maritime archaeological artefacts and assemblages in Victoria.
All assemblages submitted to Heritage Victoria must be catalogued using the Heritage Victoria Catalogue Template.
