Local Government Funding
Heritage advisors
Victorian Councils are eligible for dollar-for-dollar funding for their Local Government Heritage Advisory Service. Heritage Advisors are part-time consultants who provide free advice on heritage matters to local communities. The service is supported by the State Government through a professional development workshop program and an email chat group (HeritageChat) for heritage advisors and council officers.
Enquiries on establishing a heritage advisory service at your local council should be directed to Lisa Rogers, Heritage Victoria at lisa.rogers@dpcd.vic.gov.au
Heritage Advisory Services should be based upon the recommended consultancy brief:

Heritage studies
Since the 1970s Heritage Victoria has worked to ensure that every municipality has the benefit of a heritage study. The program is nearing completion with most councils having now been surveyed.
Heritage Victoria is working with the few remaining councils to ensure that heritage studies are completed. Current funding is devoted to assisting these councils to undertake and implement heritage studies. Councils with geographic gaps in their existing heritage studies (due to, for example, council amalgamations in the 1990s) may also be eligible for funding assistance.
Assistance is subject to evidence of council commitment. This can be demonstrated by:
- a financial contribution
- evidence that previous studies have been satisfactorily implemented through the planning scheme
- council documents that identify the need for the study such as the Council Plan; the Municipal Strategic Statement and/or a municipal heritage strategy.
