Vic-Heritage iPhone App launched

04 Jan 2012

Vic-Heritage, a free app for iPhone, explores the architectural and historical gems of Melbourne and regional Victoria, providing access to the Victorian Heritage Database while on-the-go.

It features audio walking tours, allows users to create their own tours, and to add their own stories and images to the official records of heritage places.

The Minister for Planning, Matthew Guy, launched Vic-Heritage on Wednesday 14 December at the Immigration Museum. Minister Guy said: “The Vic-Heritage app will be valuable to locals and travellers alike who are interested in understanding how and why an area has developed.  Even your morning commute can be enhanced by learning about the significant heritage places en route.”

Many places on the Victorian Heritage Register are private residences and most are not open to the public. Enjoy these properties from the street and respect the privacy of owners.

The App is free to download and the perfect companion for visitors or locals with an interest in architecture and design, history and heritage.

Download the app from Apple’s iTunes store.

Add information, create and share tours

We want to capture local knowledge and stories of these places to share with the rest of the state.

Share your stories

To add content, whether its a snippet, story or photograph about a place, you’d like to share:

  • Go to the place record of the place, and press the ' Add content button' on the bottom of the place record.
  • Then select whether you are adding a note or an image and follow the prompts from there.

Create a tour

Develop a tour and, if you wish, share it with everyone else:

  • Go to a place you want to add, click the ‘Add to tour’ button at the bottom of the place record.  This will bring up the 'My Tours' screen.
  • You can add it to a tour which is already created (by clicking on the name of the tour) or make a new tour by pressing the plus (+) button on the top right hand corner of the 'My Tours' page.  This brings up a text box for you to add the name for a new tour.
  • Keep adding places to that tour, through the process described above.
  • Once you have completed the tour, go to the 'My Tours' section, click on the tour you want to submit, press on the plus (+) button on the top right hand corner of the screen, and click 'Submit Tour'.
