The Burra Charter

In December 2013, the Heritage Council resolved to recognise and endorse the Burra Charter 2013 as a key document for guiding best-practice cultural heritage management in Victoria.

On 7 July 2010 the Executive Director, Heritage Victoria recognised and endorsed the Burra Charter 1999 as a key document for guiding best-practice heritage management in Victoria.

Other matters to be considered in determining a permit application

Matters to be considered in determining a permit application under section 73(1)(b) of the Heritage Act 1995

Effective 1 May 2012 the Executive Director of Heritage Victoria adopted the policy 'Matters to be considered in determining a permit application under section 73(1)(b) of the Heritage Act 1995’ (PDF 519 KB) or (Word 1 MB) for all permits for heritage places and objects applied for under s.67 of the Heritage Act 1995 from 1 May 2012.

Victorian Design Review Panel

Effective 1 July 2012, the Executive Director of Heritage Victoria has adopted the policy ‘The consideration of recommendations of the Victorian Design Review Panel under sections 73(1)(f) and 73(1A)(b) of the Heritage Act 1995’ (PDF 510 KB) or (Word 1 MB). This guidance will enable the Executive Director to take account of the findings of a Victorian Design Review Panel (VDRP) report in his/her decision making and the Heritage Council on appeal.

Read more information about the Office of the Victorian Government's Design Review Panel. The purpose of this policy is to encourage high quality design solutions for works to places and objects on the Victorian Heritage Register and give weight to the advice of the VDRP.

Victorian Government Cultural Heritage Asset Management Principles

The Executive Director, Heritage Victoria has adopted the Victorian Government Cultural Heritage Asset Management Principles as guidelines for all permits applied for by State Government departments and agencies under s.67 of the Heritage Act1995.

The adoption of the Principles as decision making guidelines under s. 73(1)(f) of the Heritage Act will take effect for permit applications for State Government owned or managed places and objects on the Victorian Heritage Register made on or after 1 July 2010.

Access for people with disabilities to Heritage Places

The Executive Director, Heritage Victoria, has adopted the Technical Leaflet entitled 'Access for all to Heritage Places' (Heritage Council of Victoria, December 2008) as guidelines for all permits that include the provision of access to heritage places for people with disabilities applied for under s.67 of the Heritage Act 1995. 

The adoption of the Technical Leaflet as decision making guidelines under s.73 (1)(f) of the Heritage Act will take effect for permit applications for places on the Victorian Heritage Register made on or after 1 January 2011.

Shipwreck permits

Effective 23 August 2012 the Executive Director of Heritage Victoria adopted the policy ‘Matters to be considered in determining permit applications for exploration or recovery of historic shipwrecks and historic shipwreck relics under section 113 of the Heritage Act 1995’ (PDF 557 KB) or (Word 1 MB).
