Indicators of community strength

The Indicators of Community Strength measure Victorian’s perception of their local area amenity, ability to get help when needed, participation and select social attitudes. The following reports provide the framework and evidence that underpin the indicators, 2008 local government area data and an examination of some indicators by select population groups.

This report provides the underpinning framework and evidence for DPCD's community development work and Indicators of Community Strength.  It shows that building community participation and collaborative governance have significant outcomes.  These include better physical and mental health, positive parenting, improved child development, success at school, better employment outcomes and positive aging.  For communities outcomes include the spread of information and innovation, social cohesion and improved community planning that turns assets into outcomes such as jobs, educational achievement and satisfaction, etc.

Indicators of Community Strength at the Local Government Area level in Victoria 2008

This report provides the results of a survey about community strength in 450 residents per Local Government Area (LGA) across Victoria in 2008. The indicators were collected as part of the inaugural LGA level Victorian Population Health Survey run by the Department of Health. They were previously collected in a survey run by the then Department for Victorian Communities. The surveys were combined to reduce the burden of surveying on Victorian communities.

The indicators are a tool for community planning, and not a report card, as they are affected by the combined actions of government, business and the community. In some cases they may even be influenced by international trends and events. Responsibility for improvements in the indicators does not lie with any organisation alone.

Indicators of community strength in Victoria (2004)

This report examines 11 indicators of community strength, including feeling safe in the streets after dark, being able to have a say on local issues, volunteering, and having networks of people who can provide support in a crisis. The report examines time trends (2001-2003), population groups and the results of a pilot of the indicators measured at the small geographic area.
