Call for change during NAIDOC week

04 Jul 2011

Indigenous Victorians are encouraged to continue to seek change during the 2011 NAIDOC Week celebrations.

Embracing the 2011 National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week theme of 'Change: the next step is ours' and the Victorian theme of 'William Cooper: Equal Rights, Still A Fight', William Cooper would have been proud of the achievements Indigenous Australians have made.

The annual NAIDOC Week celebration gives us pause to reflect on how far Aboriginal Australians have come since William Cooper’s first delegation in the 1930s.

A Yorta Yorta man, William Cooper was integral to the establishment of the Australian Aborigines League, and a determined advocate for equal rights.

The Victorian Government will recognise the significant contributions of Aboriginal Victorians through Australia’s first Indigenous Honour Roll, and will support future leaders through programs such as the Wayaperri Indigenous Leadership Initiative.

We are supporting and developing future Aboriginal business and community leaders so we can close the economic gap between the Aboriginal community and the broader Victorian community. Improved health outcomes cannot be achieved without addressing the full range of social, cultural and economic issues that impact on Aboriginal people.

Together, the ambitious goal of equality can be reached.
