Increasing the pool of mentors for Aboriginal Victorians
09 Feb 2011
The Indigenous Leadership Network Victoria has partnered with the Victorian Government in establishing a mentor bank to grow the pool of trained and culturally competent mentors and leaders available to guide Aboriginal people.
Aboriginal people wanting to support other Aboriginal people in reaching their aspirations are encouraged to register for the two-day Diversity Mentoring Training Program which will be delivered by the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre in May 2011.
The Victorian Government will cover the full cost of the mentor training as well as accommodation and/or transport for those attending the training from regional Victoria.
About the Diversity Mentoring training
The training will provide participants with the skills and tools needed to become an effective mentor for an Aboriginal person.
Mentors will provide guidance in a wide range of areas including:
- business skills
- workforce participation and
- transition from schooling to further education, training and employment.
The Diversity Mentoring Training Program is a comprehensive course designed for Aboriginal people who wish to further develop their leadership knowledge, skills and networks. The unique program includes coverage relating to the mentoring experience, diversity, leadership, ethics and strategies for success.
This initiative is part of Victorian Government's Aboriginal Economic Development package announced in mid 2010.
The training courses will be held in Melbourne on Wednesday 18 May to Thursday 19 May 2011 and on Friday 20 May to Saturday 21 May 2011 and follow up workshops will be held in November 2011.
