Overview
The Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate (Inspectorate) compliance team is responsible for conducting scheduled and spot audits of all Victorian local councils to assess compliance with the Local Government Act 1989 (Act).
The audit program encourages cooperation between councils and the Inspectorate to promote an effective, voluntary compliance culture, encourage best practice and achieve transparent governance.
Whilst providing an independent appraisal of key processes surrounding council operations and compliance with the Act, the team also reviews the effectiveness and efficiency of risk management and governance processes. This assesses if current practices and controls are effective, risks are managed and operating procedures are compliant with legislative requirements.
The Inspectorate is committed to assisting councils to achieve clear, transparent governance and avoid possible breaches of the Act.
