The action plan
The action plan is the document created by council to address areas of practice that were rated as close to compliant or not compliant with the Local Government Act 1989 (Act) by the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate (Inspectorate) compliance team during an audit.
Where areas of council practice are identified as close to compliant or not compliant, council will be provided with recommendations and asked to propose corrective action and timeframes to address the identified issues.
The action plan documents the corrective action proposed by council and is reviewed by the Inspectorate to ensure actions will result in compliance with the Act. Once agreed, the action plan is signed by the council CEO formalising council’s commitment to the plan. A copy of the action plan is held by the Inspectorate.
After a period of time, the compliance team will return to council to review the implementation of the action plan.
The Inspectorate has published a number of information bulletins to assist councils in developing best practice processes and ensuring compliance with the Act.
Local Government Victoria has published a number of guides for council governance to assist in continuous improvement and best practice processes.
