New piazza a triumph for Werribee
14 Jul 2011The three tiers of government came together to open the new Wedge Street Piazza in Werribee.
The Planning Minister Matthew Guy joined the Prime Minister Julia Gillard and the Mayor of Wyndham City Council Cr John Menegazzo to officially open the new $1.6 million piazza.
The piazza will create a sense of place for people to visit and enjoy, whether they’re a family doing the weekly shopping or local workers taking a lunch break.
The piazza is just one part of the riverbank’s redevelopment which will help to reorient Werribee towards its best assets – the Werribee River and Wyndham Park. Other planned works include a Riverbank Mall, a new pedestrian bridge and upgraded Wyndham Park.
The development takes into account the close proximity of the river, with paving designed to reflect 'serpentine’ forms of the river and bridge. It includes walkways, public seating with shelter, a small stage and native vegetation.
The project created jobs for 40 people during its construction and took more than a year to complete. It was jointly funded by the three tiers of government, including $280,500 from DPCD for design and construction works.
