About Box Hill Activities Area

Box Hill is an important location because it is a major residential and commercial hub and has:

  • One of Melbourne’s biggest transport interchanges 
  • A diverse mix of land uses, with two major hospitals, two shopping centres, a TAFE, restaurants and offices 

Box Hill is expected to accommodate a significant increase in housing around the core retail district, further development of the education and medical functions and improvements to the retail sector and office precincts. 

The City of Whitehorse has developed a vision for the future development of the city in the Box Hill Activity Centre Structure Plan 2007

Box Hill Activities Area projects

Over $2 million from the Victorian Government and the City of Whitehorse has been spent on planning and improvements including:

  • Upgrades of the Market and Main Street Malls

  • Preparation of the Structure Plan

Other government investments include:

  • $447.5 million for Box Hill Hospital Stage 2 redevelopment
  • $22 million was spent on extending the Route 109 tram from Mont Albert to Box Hill in 2003
  • $4.5 million provided to establish a Nursing Centre of Excellence at Box Hill TAFE
  • $38 million for the Box Hill Hospital support services
  • $8.5 million for an infrastructure upgrade at the Box Hill Hospital including theatre, electrical and mechanical services works
  • $5.1 million for Box Hill Institute of TAFE (Commonwealth Supported Projects) for construction of a wireless local area network and for refurbishment of existing training space
  • Funding for Orbital SmartBus routes, providing orbital bus routes between Box Hill to Altona and Nunawading to Airport West
  • $56.2 million TEI to grade separate Middleborough Road and the Belgrave – Lilydale line in Box Hill
  • $19.7 million for a new Box Hill Police Station
  • Funding of $2.5 million to Whitehorse City Council as part of a $15.1 million project to redevelop the Aqualink facility in Box Hill.

545 Station Street, Box Hill Site Development Framework

A site Development Framework has been prepared to provide guidance for future development of vacant land at 545-563 Station Street, Box Hill, on the corner of Carrington Road.

This Framework clarifies the matters that a developer, along with their architect and advisors, should address in preparing any future proposal for development on this site, including existing policies and the context of the site.

This Framework was prepared by a Working Party comprising senior officers of the Department of Planning and Community Development, Whitehorse City Council and an expert chairman.  The Working Party was established in August 2010 and completed its work in April 2011.  The Framework is a reference document in the Whitehorse Planning Scheme (Clause 22.07-04)
