About Geelong Activities Area
Geelong is strategically important as it is Victoria's second largest city and is currently enjoying significant growth due to the size and diversity of its local economy, coastal location and unique identity.
Geelong is also close to Avalon Airport which is increasing its role in providing domestic flights and emerging as an important employment precinct for the region. The Geelong Ring Road is a major road project that currently provides a 26 kilometre freeway link between Corio and Waurn Ponds, along Geelong's western outskirts.
The State Government is also investing in the $4 billion Regional Rail Link project, which will support Geelong's growth by providing more frequent and reliable regional rail services.
Geelong Activities Area projects
The Department of Planning and Community Development is working with the City of Greater Geelong, Deakin University and the Committee for Geelong on a vision for the future development of central Geelong.
The aim of the Vision II is to achieve a shared vision for central Geelong and identify areas, strategies and opportunities that will provide a stimulus, momentum and investment for the next 20 years.
The name Vision II acknowledges the completion of the first vision for Geelong which resulted in the transformation of the Geelong waterfront.
- Trainshed Way Development
The State Government is working with the privte sector to help facilitate development on under utilised land near the Geelong Station Precinct. Investigatiions are underway to assess how new buildings in the area might contribute to the life and vitality of the area.
- Connectivity and Public Realm
The State Government has provided the Greater Geelong City Council with a $1 million grant to undertake public realm improvements in Geelong's city centre and assist in acquiring laneways.
The public realm refers to all exterior places, linkages and built form elements that are accessible to everyone, regardless of ownership. These elements can include streets, pedestrian walks, bikeways, plazas, transport hubs, gateways, parks, natural features, landmarks and building interfaces.
Completed projects
Trainshed Way has been completed. It is a new street which connects the Geelong Station entrance with Mercer street and improves pedestrian and cyclist connections to waterfront and central Geelong.
Other complementary works improving bus movements at the Geelong Station have also been completed.
