South East Green Wedge

South East Green Wedge

Melbourne 2030 defines green wedges as "the 12 non-urban areas that surround the built-up urban areas of metropolitan Melbourne and are outside the Urban Growth Boundary".

The Government is working with local councils and the community to properly plan, manage and protect these areas through the development of Green Wedge Management Plans. One of these 12 green wedges is the South East Green Wedge.

The northern portion of the South East Green Wedge is known as the Kingston Green Wedge. The area contains many facilities and land uses of strategic importance to the surrounding region and to the wider metropolitan area, including Moorabbin Airport, extractive industry and waste management operations, various public land uses and recreation facilities, golf courses and open space and several sites of environmental significance.

Creating a Shared Vision

It includes a range of measures that will achieve long term open space and green wedge strategic planning objectives.

As the first stage in the process towards a South East Green Wedge Management Plan, Kingston Council will prepare a separate Kingston Green Wedge Management Plan that will be integrated with the broader plan when completed.

The Background Report and Issues Paper is the first step in the process to preparing a South East Green Wedge Management Plan.

The Department of Planning and Community Development together with representatives from the councils that share the South East Green Wedge engaged consultants to prepare the report, which provides the councils with up-to-date information and an understanding of issues and possible solutions for this green wedge land. This information will aid the councils in the development of the South East Green Wedge Management Plan.

This report summarises information relevant to the South East Green Wedge and is designed to assist the strategic planning process for this green wedge land. The information base should not be interpreted as being exhaustive.

The report does not represent the views of the Department or the Councils. The vision, objectives and actions for the sustainable use and management of the green wedge will be developed in consultation with the community during the preparation of the South East Green Wedge Management Plan.
