Housing capacity
Housing Capacity Assessments
The Government has appointed a consortium, led by SGS Economics and Planning, to undertake an assessment of metropolitan Melbourne's capacity to accommodate future housing development. This will provide a comprehensive picture of opportunities and constraints affecting the delivery of new housing in existing urban areas. In consultation with local government, the process will identify the baseline capacity, the likely take-up/supply of new housing, and the scope to enhance capacity to meet future housing needs.Detailed housing development data has been commissioned to inform the capacity assessment process. The data will provide more detailed information than has previously been available on what housing development has occurred across Melbourne over the last five years. Reports are intended to be made available to councils and other agencies in late 2011.
In April 2010, grants totaling $1.5 million were announced for metropolitan councils to assist in delivering more housing choice for all Melburnians. Further support to councils will be considered in future years as implementation proceeds.
