Activity Centre Design Guidelines
The Activity Centre Design Guidelines will help support councils and developers in creating well designed activity centres in Victoria. The Guidelines will provide advice to developers, planners and place managers on what constitutes best-practice in developing vibrant, high quality activity centres.
The guidelines are structured under eight elements of design consideration:
- urban structure
- stations and interchanges
- street design
- public spaces
- building design
- malls and large stores
- higher density housing
- car parking
The guidelines will provide advice and guidance to councils in structure planning for activity centres and in developing individual planning scheme policies and controls. Planning and responsible authorities should have regard to the Guidelines in preparing activity centre structure plans and in assessing the design and built form of new development in activity centres (Clause 19.03 of the State Planning Policy Framework).
Each activity centre has distinguishing features and attributes which are revealed and highlighted through excellent design. These guidelines will ensure activity centres are designed so that they are exciting places where people want to live, work, shop and play – an important part of preserving our liveability now and for the future.
