Central City & Docklands advice

Central City - building sketch, docklands, public art
The Urban Design Unit provides urban design advice on major development in the inner Melbourne area. This advice is delivered through the Central City Approvals unit established to support the Minister for Planning in his role as responsible authority for development with a gross floor area exceeding 25,000 square metres across the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD), which includes Docklands. The Unit has been involved in major projects such as Southern Cross Station, Melbourne Convention Centre, Melbourne Showgrounds Redevelopment, Urban Workshop, Queen Victoria Redevelopment and the refurbishment and redevelopment of Melbourne Central.

We provide advice on:
  • the strategic location of the proposal and its response to the urban context
  • scale, form and general design quality of proposals
  • the extent, functionality and quality of active frontages of proposals
  • connectivity and access considerations particularly with regard to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport
  • the merits of any urban realm or landscape design proposals
  • any environmentally sustainable design initiatives.
