Metropolitan & Regional Advice

Images of Regional centres and design advice
The Urban Design Unit regularly engages, through DPCD regional offices, with local councils in metropolitan and regional Victoria. This includes providing advice regarding matters on strategic or major sites, such as planning permit applications or planning scheme amendments having a particular urban design component. The smaller scale of regional towns and settlements will often mean that proposals for significant new development will have a major impact on the form, function and appearance of these places. Careful consideration of their design merits is, therefore, important.

We provide advice on:

  • the strategic location of the proposal and its response to the preferred context
  • the scale, form and general design merits of the buildings
  • the degree of active frontages on buildings
  • access considerations particularly with regard to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport
  • the provision and location of parking
  • the adequacy and appropriateness of any landscape design proposals
  • any environmentally sustainable design initiatives

Some examples of recent regional work include:

  • assessment and advice for Surf Coast Shire regarding growth options for Torquay through the Spring Creek Urban Growth Preliminary Framework Plan
  • assessment and advice regarding the preparation of urban growth plans for Bendigo-Strathfieldsaye and Huntly; Ballarat; Wodonga - Leneva; and Traralgon
  • advice to the City of Wangaratta to improve the design of a mixed-use multi-storey building on a key site in the centre of town
Recent work in a metropolitan context has included providing advice to local government in strategic locations, transport related infrastructure projects, and public realm improvement projects such as Urban Design Frameworks.
