Images of redevelopment and streetscape improvements in DandenongRevitalising Central Dandenong

On Wednesday 6 April 2011, DPCD, City of Greater Dandenong and VicUrban industry specialists shared their knowledge and experiences on the challenging process of delivering positive urban change in Dandenong. Dandenong is the heart of Melbourne’s growing south east corridor. The Victorian Government’s $290 million funded Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative is rejuvenating the city centre and restoring Dandenong as the capital of Melbourne’s south east.

This investment by the Government will be assigned to infrastructure and other initiatives designed to attract more than $1 billion worth of private sector investment, 5000 jobs and 4000 new dwellings.A shared vision, planning certainty, supporting infrastructure and seed projects are driving new private investment and strengthening Dandenong’s credentials as a place to live, work, learn, visit and socialise.

The Urban Master Plan is the framework for the 15-20 year vision for the largest urban renewal project in Victoria since the Melbourne Docklands. The Urban Master Plan builds upon central Dandenong's rich history and heritage as a meeting place, a market town and a centre for business, employment, living, learning and retail.

Key projects being delivered as part of Revitalising Central Dandenong include:

  • Lonsdale Street – recently completed and promising to become one of Melbourne’s great boulevards, and the heart of central Dandenong.
  • Stockmans Bridge - a new western entrance that improves bus and vehicle access to central Dandenong while reducing congestion on other main roads.
  • City Street is emerging as a green, pedestrian and cyclist friendly street that better connects the Dandenong Station to the city centre, creating development opportunities.
  • Improving amenity and safety of the Dandenong Station precinct by incorporating a new public plaza.
  • Redeveloping seven hectares of central Dandenong land.
  • The redevelopment of the Dandenong Market has led to the creation of a new fresh food hall, a grand general merchandising building and a new meat, deli and fish section.
  • Metro Village - a new master planned community offering an unmatched standard of urban living within walking distance of Dandenong train station and the heart of town.
