Veterans' digital stories
In Our Words
In Our Words is a Digital Storytelling Project which aims to record up to 200 stories of the wartime experiences of Victorian veterans and civilians. The project is being run by the Victorian Government in partnership with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the Shrine of Remembrance.
View our stories collected below and watch this space in coming months as more are added.
Since 2009, more than 120 veterans from Melbourne, Bendigo, Swan Hill, Sale, Morwell and Warrnambool have participated in the project, with the involvement of local schools. Students work side by side with the veterans and ACMI staff to create ‘mini movies’ that record and share a small part of each veterans’ rich experience and reflections.
In Our Words and schools
A selection of our veterans' stories is also part of an exciting new education collection being developed by project partner, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. The collection is available to schools online and via the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s education portal called FUSE (Find, Use, Share quality Education resources). To see more stories or to see how they will be used to teach our high school kids visit the GENERATOR pages on the ACMI website. Our veterans stories are featured in the Australians at War section as well as in discussion of education themes around Change and Resilience, Community, Young Australians, Indigenous Australian Voices and the Power of Stories.
Registration of Interest
If you are a veteran and have a story to tell and would like to volunteer to attend a 3 day workshop to create a digital story, email inourwords@dpcd.vic.gov.au to register your interest.
