At the outbreak of hostilities with Imperial Japan in 1941, Australia already had its Armed Forces operating in Malaya and Singapore. The Japanese thrust southward soon made about 22,000 Australians Prisoner's of War. The Japanese bombed Darwin and tried take Port Moresby.
