About the Office for the Community Sector

The Office for the Community Sector has been established within the Department of Planning and Community Development to implement the Victorian Government’s Action Plan: Strengthening Community Organisations (PDF 178 kb) or (Word 243 kb) (the Action Plan).

The Action Plan was developed in response to the Strengthening Community Organisations Project (PDF 1180 kb) or Part 1 (Word 2214 kb), Part 2 (Word 2324 kb), Part 3 (Word 2293 kb) (November 2007) and the State Services Authority’s Linked page opens in a new window Review of Not-For-Profit Regulation (September 2007). More information is available on the Background to the Action Plan.

The objectives of the Action Plan are:
1. To simplify and streamline Government’s interactions with not-for-profit (NFP) community organisations; and
2. To enable NFP community organisations to invest in their own capabilities and long term sustainability.

The 25 actions in the Action Plan are grouped under the following five themes:
1. Reducing red tape for NFP community organisations
2. Building the capacity of community organisations
3. Supporting innovation and growth
4. Enhancing NFP community organisations in local community life
5. Engaging with the NFP community sector and coordinating efforts across government.

The Office for the Community Sector is dedicated to strengthening the NFP community sector and will work closely with the sector to implement the Action Plan. The Office has established sector reference groups to provide advice and feedback on implementation of the actions.

The Office will lead the coordination and implementation of policy priorities affecting the NFP community sector across the whole of the Victorian Government.
